This resource could be used to illustrate the processes involved in the formation of images in plane mirrors

 

Instruction to use the resource (R1):

  • Select ‘Show Incident Rays’, ‘Show Reflected Rays’, and ‘Show Image’.

  • Point out that blue rays are Incident rays and green rays are reflected rays.

  • Point out how the blue rays from the object get reflected according to the laws of reflection. Select ‘Show Normal’, so that students get to see that angle of incidence and angle of reflection are equal.

  • Select ‘Show virtual rays’.Point out that the extension of the reflected rays ( green rays from the object) behind the mirror, are the virtual rays. Let the students conclude that the virtual rays meet on the image.

Discussion with students

  • Light rays emerge from every point on an object which is placed in bright light.

  • When the rays emerging from a point on the object get reflected from the mirror, the image formed in a plane mirror is an imaginary point behind the mirror from which the light rays appear to emerge, after reflection in the mirror.

  • The image of any point on the object is behind the mirror. The distance of the image point from the mirror is the same as the distance of the object point from the mirror.
