Understand image formation through concave and convex mirror.
Appreciate the change in the location, size and nature (real or virtual) of the image as the object is brought nearer to the mirror.
Activity: (Suggested Time: 40 - 45 minutes)
Activity Instructions:
When the object is placed at the far left-side of the grid. What can you observe?
As the object is pulled closer to the mirror, observe the behaviour of the image. does it move away, does it grow larger? When is the image the same size and distance as the object? Is it still inverted?
Observe the behaviour of the image as the object is pulled even closer, from C to F. What do we observe and what can we conclude?
When the object is at the focal point, what happens to the reflected rays? Are they parallel? Does an image get formed?
What happens as the object moves slightly closer than focus (to the right of focus)? Is the image real? inverted? magnified?
Assessment:
Calculate the magnification of the image at any selected object position, using the object and image sizes given by the simulator. Check using the formula involving object and image distance
Pay attention to the sign convention for the distances. When is the image distance positive, when is it negative, why?
